    Hessian Artillery unit info needed...

    A friend has an Imperial German presentation sword from the Hessian Field Artillery Regt. No. 25, Heavy Artillery. Can anyone supply me with some unit info on this regiment?
    Thanks!

    Andrew;

    First of all, you will have to decide whether you are talking about Field Artillery or Heavy Artillery, which the Germans usually called Fuss=Artillerie. The two are completely seperate. The Germans talked about "heavy artillery" and "heaviest artillery" when technically describing weapons, but never, to my knowledge, when describing units. If it is an Artillery Regt. No. 25, it probably is field artillery. If you can provide the specific unit information off the sword, and the recepient's name, I'm sure someone will help you. Also be warned that Imperial German regiments usually had two regimental numbers; one for within the Imperial Army, the other within the region or kingdom from which it came, e.g., Field Artillery Regiment (Brandenburg Nr. 1) Nr. 3; e.g., the third field artillery regiment of the Imperial Army, which also was the 1st field artillery regiment from Brandenburg, Prussia. So present all the obvious info, or post a scan if you have a problem with the writing.

      • GroƟherzogl. Hess Feld Artillery Regiment #25 founded 1790, Garrison Darmstadt, Part of XVIII AK.

      The Ruhmeshalle lists this regiment as part of the 25th Division. Parts of the FAR 25 stayed w/ the division throughout the war. Invaded Luxemburg Aug 10/11 1914. Part of 4th Army. Things get complex from there. If Reserve there is an entirely different track. Hope this helps!

        The Hessian FAR 25 was considered an "elite" unit and only the Prussian guard field artillery regiments 1-4 and this unit wore litzen on their collar and cuffs. Here is a M-1907/10 Hessian FAR 25 officer's waffenrock.
