    WWI German Donald Duck Cap

A contact of mine acquired this World War I Donald Duck Navy cap from a very elderly woman (now deceased) several years ago (I recently bought this cap from my contact). The woman said that the cap belonged to her relative (brother?) who served on a "famous ship." The cap came with an extra cap band, the 4. Kompanie of the I. Matrosen = Division, which I am assuming was the sailor's training unit. The cap itself has the cap band for the S.M.S. GROSSER KURFUERST. Information about this battleship can be found here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Gro...C3%BCrst_(1913)

The ship had a very interesting history and participated in the Battle of Jutland.

A cloth tag with the sailor's last name - Kanikowski - is sewn in the top of the cap. I imagine that some German archive has records about this sailor.

I have never owned such a cap before and am wondering what it's value is.

A very nice Tellermutze to a great ship! Extremely well marked I don't want to stop you from trying, however I have a few sailor's effect's (rank, tag, bosun's pipe, cap tally and charcoal drawing) from the light cruiser Coeln. When I tried WASt thinking it would be easy with such a small ship and the the dog tag, I was told that they didn't have any records for the crew of either ship (1st one was sunk in 1914, the 2nd scuttled at Scapa Flow in 18). Good Luck in your research! Please keep us posted if you find out anything

That's a very nice issue cap with the correct pressed paper cockade. You don't see many issued ones in comparison to private purchase pieces. This seems to be true even in period studio portraits. I couldn't hazard a guess as to a current price, as I have had mine for many years. There are just not many of these that surface and there are not that many imperial navy collectors either (probably due to the lack of available material).

Cap still retains it's crown spring as well, a lot had the spring removed to be shaped and give it a more salty look
