Your thoughts on an 1916 Camo please.

M-1916 Camouflage Combat Helmet Shell. The helmet shell is marked "G 62".

I'm cool with it having the hole on top & no liner + white inside- in fact that's why I'm so interested. These are best pics I've got.

    Is the CAMO Ok???

    Cheers,

    Jamie

    Hello Jamie,

IMO, it's an old post war painted M16 shell that was once used as a lamp shade.

      Hi Chuck,

I'm mainly interested in it due to the lamp shade aspect. It's for sale at Grenadier Military Antiques. http://web.iwebcenters.com/grenadier...tem182978.ctlg
I was hoping it would be original. Would the Camo in your opinion have been applied long after the war ie made into a lamp in the 1960's? Or applied postwar to sell as a Battlefield souvenir lamp immediate postwar?
Immediate postwar I could live with.
      Desperate times = ingenuity.
I only wish it still had its stand.

      Cheers,

      Jamie

        Jamie,

I don't know when this shell was painted, but there's no way in hell anyone will convince me the camo paint was wartime applied. And, I don't understand how anyone can advertise this as an "untouched" helmet... it's got a hole drilled top center and it has been repainted inside and out. There are many areas to point out in regards to the paint. Here's one red flag... take a look at the liner pin holes in the shell... there's paint running into them. The paint flows smoothly around these holes as if no liners pins were in place when it was painted. At least, this is what it looks like to me in the pictures.

It could very well have been a WWI Veteran souvenir made up lamp. You could hunt down a killer trench art shell and make a nice lamp if you want, but the amount of money you're going to spend on this project would be better saved for an original.

          Hi Chuck,

I never considered the paint around the pin holes. You are the Guru!
I've been searching for a Helmet Lampshade. However, I wanted it all original (even if in pieces).

It appears this isn't which is very disappointing.
          Thanks again.
