    Shako

Hi guys I don't know a lot about this sort of thing but I found a Shako last week and I'm going to take a second look at it tomorrow and was wanting some ideas as to what it is, I don't have any pics until tomorrow but it is green felt with brown visors and a brown leather chin strap with 2 gold colored buckles. The eagle is gold colored it looked complete in reasonable condition a little mishapened. I will post pics when I get some but what do you think it might be? I know its hard to tell from my description, but all the shako's I have seen are leather not felt. were these used in combat?

Sounds like a WWII German Police shako. Try the TR forum.

No its not TR definatly imperial, I was searching the imperial forum and found one from awhile back that was an officers version, The posts said it was a machine gun unit shako here is the link to that thread, I'm not saying this is what it is but it looks just like this one, but its an enlisted version.

If it's like the one Giorgio posted you might be onto something. Post the pictures when you can.

There were only a few imperial shakos that had a felt covering. If the one you have seen has brown visors and leather trim, it pretty much has to be a machine gun detachment shako. These can be very valuable. Take a look at this. This photo was lifted from the Pickelhaubes website and was taken by Chris at La Pompelle.

                      Be Careful!

                      Looks like something put together:

                      1.) Body looks painted green
2.)Visors look to be painted brown
3.) Stitching holes are far too far apart even for an enlisted pattern shako, located on the visors and on the top piece of the shako where they are sewn on to the body of the shako.
4.)The wearer's right side of front visor looks to have an added brass brad on the visor, near where the right corner attaches to the shako body.
5.) The Prussian eagle frontplate is incorrect. It is a spike helmet frontplate, which is considerably larger than the smaller regulation style eagle that should be worn on a shako.
6.)Looks like the visors are home-made. Someone took a leather tool, and made a line along the edge on the front and back visor. The front visor should have a raised, beaded edge trim to it.
7.)It's hard to tell from your camera phone photos, but the liner looks like it was patched into the helmet.
8.)The national colors (black-white-red) kokarde on the wearer's right side of the shako looks like a modern repro
9.)Entire shako looks like it was crudely made, and is unlike the quality manufacture of an original shako

It wouldn't be for me, and I'd stay clear of this one no matter how low the price would be.

                      Hope this helps!

                      All the Best,

                      Alan

                          It's a fake/reproduction, i.e. - junk.
