    German gasmask m16

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me if this Gasmask is a M16 Gummimask Type 3 (Rahmenmaske M16) and if the canister fit with all the M16 Gummimasken?

    Description:

The mask is stamped size 3; it has tree elastic straps (the one on top is Y shaped); the base of the mask where we can fix the filter cartridge canister has a diameter of 3.15 inches (8cm) and has the owner name with his unit (A. Wostmann N°273); the filter is marked 11-11-SS and dated 23.6.16; the canister has is roughly 5.9 inches (15cm) tall with 4.72 inches (12cm) diameter.

                Richard,

                Give this thread a read.

It has a lot of good information. I do believe that your ID is correct, though there was one more improvement and that was the tension springs added to the head straps.

Your can is also a later style for the Gummimaske. The earliest model had the Gebrauchsanweisung in the lid under the cage and a concave ring around the body of the can.

                It's a very nice set.

I agree with Chip. The mask is the 1st version Rahmenmaske, and it, along with the can, appears to be in excellent shape. The filter date and model is nice and early, but correct, for a Rahmenmaske.

The canister is quite intriguing because its design lies somewhere between the early model 1916 cans and the later versions. Even though it has a convex ring around the center and the instruction label is located at the base of the can, I think it's still a fairly early version. The interior has been left field gray as opposed to the glossy black that appears in later M16 cans. More tellingly, the instructions appear be the early version used with the Bandmaske. The later instructions specifically mention the Rahmenmaske and give separate instructions on how to fasten the straps for that model since they had to be pulled further back on the head. It's not the first Rahmenmaske I've seen with the early Gebrauchsanweisung in the can.

Here you can see another example of the early Gebrauchsanweisung (on the right) for the Bandmaske. Next to it on the left is the later version mentioning the Rahmenmaske.

...a general overview of early to late M16 cans - presented here from left to right. Aside from the possibility that it could be a manufacturing variant, it seems that the very first version of the can had no cage inside the lid.

                      Hans,

Very nice explanation. It looks like you have found a few additional pieces to add to your collection and which further help to unravel the timeline and variation questions we have concerning these early gas warfare items.
