    Kornel,

This picture has turned up on various forums, so I don't know exactly who originally posted it. It's a cropped picture, and the full original can be seen in Volume I of Haselgrove and Radovic's "History of the Steel Helmet in the First World War". The entire picture shows other helmets in the background painted in different but also unusual patterns.

not sure if I found the original owner.

Looks like he was killed in action? Robert

Thanks for looking it up for me Robert. I have a feeling this is a different soldier, not only because of the rank, but also because the date he fell is likely far too early for a camo helmet. I have to look it up again, but I managed to find a Gefreiter Oswald Naumann who fell in late 1918 and is buried in a French cemetary.

Thanks for the wonderful comments Gents.

Edit: Just looked it up again on the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge and here it is:

      Oswald Naumann

Oswald Naumann ruht auf der Kriegsgräberstätte in Le Cateau.

      Endgrablage: Block 3 Grab 741

      Nachname:Naumann

      Vorname:Oswald

      Dienstgrad: Gefreiter

      Todes-/Vermisstendatum:18.10.1918

Perhaps where the unit fought would shed light on the camo design. I imagine there would be a different camo scheme for the Somme vs the Argonne.
