    Hello,

The insignia is a Königsabzeichen, that is, king's insignia, which was a shooting award. These men are Württemberg troops and therefore the king's crown on the insignia. The king's crown was used by Bavaria, Saxony and Württemberg, while all other contingent's badges used the Kaiser crown. These men appear to be from I.R.120.

I believe that badge has a date between the rifles butts above the bow on the wreath...they had the same type for artillery too. I think i have a regular crowned one for 1909. This looks like it may be 1912, anybody disagree?

Another interesting thing is that these badges were supposed to be turned back in unless you won the competition again the following year. If you did, you were allowed to keep it and permanently wear it. You can identify these multiple awards badges by the ribbons wrapping around the wreathes on the sides where the extra dates were added. It appears this badge has those. Also, this photo had to be taken some time in 1916 or later, so the NCO's badge must have been a multiple award.

I checked the records and found that the 8th company of the I.R.120 won back to back awards two times, 1903-1904 and 1909-1910. The 12th company won the award three years in a row, 1911-1912-1913. Over the nineteen year period from 1895 throughl 1913, the 120th regiment won this award eight times....two more times than the nearest other Württemberg regiment.

            Looks like 1913 to me.

Can you tell me where the records of this award are Chip? I'd be interested in taking a look at them.

Yes, they are in my computer! If you would like the file, just PM me your e-mail address and I will send it to you. Unfortunately, I will not be able to do that until next weekend, but I will do it then if you are interested.

                Hello,

the photo was taken in "Colmar" and the postcard was send on the 08.01.1918.
Maybe the detailphoto of the shoulderboard helps with the unit?

                regards,

It's the cypher of the Wüttemberg I.R. Nr.120.
