    Officer pickelhaube question

I know brads are often thought of as wartime for private purchase officer but how early would you expect to see them and be ok with it?
Speaking of attachment of the frontplate and baseplate.

I'm not sure if I 100% understand your question...but I will jump in and maybe prompt others as well.

I would think that the most common method of frontplate and base attachement for officer helmets were threaded posts.

Of course the EM issue hemets were most often loops on the frontplates and split brads on the bases.

Are you encountering some other method of attachement for officer helm fixtures?

        Perry,

So I understand that the brads that are referring to are the split pin or cotter key type? This would be the stars used around the base and on the back of the front plate? If so, I can say for sure if I have seen it before on an officer helm but I would think it possible as simply a variation way of doing it....they are for sure found on EM and NCO pickelhaube.

I'm surprised that no one else has commented. I am no authority on these helmets but many others are that I respect.

I personally can not recall seeing this attachment method used on officer helmets, but I have not examined hundreds of them from the inside maybe only dozens of them....there were tens of thousands made of this model so I can say if several hundred or more were made like this one I would not have seen it.

For me the fittings look mint in terms of gilt and lack of wear....but really so does the helmet body (only more age natural to the leather) and I know the body is real...so maybe the fittings are as well...they fit very nice as well...not easy to do with replaced fittings....I also doubt that that may helmet bodies in this condition would be out there with no fittings thus being targeted for replacement fittings.

THe fake fittings that I have seen have threaded posts as well....so maybe someone with some knowledge will speak up.
