    Braunschweig Tellermütze Husaren-Regiment Nr. 17

    Hello all

Just wanted to share my latest acquisition to my collection with all you guys. It is a private purchase Tellermütze for Husaren-Regiment Nr. 17 in black with red band and yellow piping. Very nice condition all around the exterior and the interior isn't all that bad also. The totenkopf is of the enlisted mans style and design. It is attached to the body of the cap with three prongs, no extra holes anywhere on this one. As you can see from the photos it has a very nice foiled makers mark from Braunschweig.

Cap looks interesting, don't like the skull.

PS: Notice the shap of the bones!

Here you find a similar fake skull. A very common fake today:

do you have pictures of the back of the skulls you posted? the prongs? the back of mine has three prongs in what seems to be brass that have been soldered on the skull. the cap itself has only three holes consistent with prongs of the skull through the cap itself. I don't think any other type of skull was attached unless it had three prongs. and of course there wasn't just one manufacturer for these skulls, just like a lot of other parts, so couldn't there be a lot of variants?

Originals came with 2 and with 3 prongs back. A look at the back of your skull confirms that it is the known fake. In this case they tried to give the skull an "aged look". You should try to find an original skull with 3 prongs, then you can use the old holes of your cap. The problem is, it is hard job to find one with 3 prongs, because such skulls are much rarer than skulls with 2 prongs.

You are saying that the "aged look" is the give away? or just in general everything on the back?

Although I am not 100% sure about the authenticity of the skull it to me doesn't look like any of the fakes I have seen for instance on Ebay. You can see in the back view photo it clearly has brass prongs and grey soldering, I have not seen that on any of the fakes I have seen.

for instance this type I see all the time, bottom prongs are horizontal and the detail is not so good

I appreciate your input and information! the best part is learning and listening, thanks!

Well, they made many fake variants during last years. Some skulls were very poorly made, others have a very good quality and can fool many collectors today.

                Look at this one!
