Over The Hill Periscope?

We've all heard of Trench scopes but found this in a 1920's book. Stated as being an over trees/hill periscope. Cool, anything to save the legs, sit back have a beer see whats going on.

It's a Mastfernrohr. There were over 200 units early in the war, but they were disbanded in 1918. They were part of the survey service of the foot artillery.
