War Memorial.. help please

Gentlemen
I picked this up a while back on Auction. On one of my crusades to remove it from the collecting world more than anything. I don't collect anything like this nor do I condone it.

I not sure 100% what it is but I have a feeling it may be from a war cemetery either from a marker of a fallen soldier or even a cemetery gate?
I would love very much to return it to its rightful place if indeed that is the case. I contacted the War Graves Commission but so far haven't heard anything.
Maybe our European friends have seen something similar or know where its from.

If its just a harmless collectible fair enough. I,d appreciate any help Gents.

Eric,

Even though I applaud your intentions, there have been many German war memorials torn down both in France and Germany over the years for various reasons, i.e, making way for a new monument, making way for other construction, crumbling away, political motivations, etc. I wouldn't be too quick to decide that this has been broken loose by vandals. Of course, if you can locate its former home, more power to you!

I have seen things like this over ornate lists of fallen soldiers in churches and Stadthalle etc. I would guess that it may be from something like that.
