That's a very rare plate! Its an enlisted man's helmet, and should really have the standard one-piece Reichs and Prussian cockades...

Grenadier-Regiment 7 (2.Westpreussisches). They were garrisoned in Liegnitz. It is a wonderful Pickelhaube.

Thanks guys, but I'm still confused. So, it is an EM helmet, but it has an officer's plate on the front? Doesn't the iron cross in the center mean that it is a reserve officer?

The cross means that he was in the Reserves, but has nothing to do with officer rank per se...

Not a problem, that's why we're all here.

You helmet is quite rare because Grenadier-Regiment König Wilhelm I (2. Westpreußisches) Nr. 7 was the only unit to use that helmet wappen plate. Also, your helmet hasn't been messed with (with the possible exception of the cockades)- the wappen plate matches its unit marking.

Concerning GR 7, it wasn't just an infantry unit- it was one of the elite units of the German army. So that alone makes it quite special.

Is there any chance we can see some better photos of the wappen plate and both cockades?

                        Hi Dan,
I think you did very well by purchasing this helmet. It's very rare as the other guys already stated, but also complete. Imo there is nothing wrong with the kokarden, since they are for Unteroffizier mit Portepee, who were allowed to wear helmets like officers except for the stars on the spike base and the kokarden. They could also wear a standard enlisted man's helmet with the right kokarden (as you show here).
To say it in one time: a Pickelhaube for Unteroffizier mit Portepee as a Reservist of Grenadier-Regiment 7...
Here is a short overvieuw of the different kokarden. For this helmet the officers model would be wrong, the other two are ok.
