It definitely looks like a standard wappen. I think I just may hold on to this helmet .

Now that's just cool! There you go, photographic proof that it was likely issued like that. Leave it be and enjoy it, I know I would!

Interesting that in the photo it looks like there is a number "8" on the shoulder straps rather than the regimental cypher of the line regiment. There are no collar or cuff Litzen either. This may help to explain the lack of the grenadier style eagle, i.e., the fact that he is probably a reservist and is wearing an obsolete (at least on paper) tunic.

There is also the possibility that the inscription was written by relatives long after the photo was taken.

Adding to the obscuration is the reality that they shared a location for their replacement Battalion for RJR eight. An interesting piece of trivia is that the reserve formation was reserve infantry Regiment eight–not reserve Grenadier Regiment eight.

Looks like a much earlier photo to me with the obsolete ammo pouches and the soon to be replaced 1st pattern 1898 bayo.
