Gran Sasso was kind enough to allow me to purchase his ersatz axe cover. As you see its too large for my example, and therefore is incorrect.
I tend to believe its a late variant cover protector for the large Pioneer job, and a welcome addition.

M1888 Beil

I've got one too! Mine is marked to an Erzatz Train Horse Depot or so I was told. The blade was broken at the top and the handle is missing a chunk of wood so a friend of mine that is a blacksmith saved the handle and repaired the break. While he had the head off he repainted all the metal parts graugrün. I am having a leather carrier made for it now.

Here's another example...loaded with marks including regiment, date, ersatz battalion, etc. The handle is old, from the same basic type of hatchet but recently added by me.
