If you had to pick one war era Pickelhaube...

While I very much enjoy collecting WW1 militaria, I'm not a wealthy person and have to impose my own limits. Unless luck strikes me, I've come to the realization that I will probably be limited to one pickelhaube for my collection.

That being said, I will obviously hold out for a perfect example of what I want, but the question is, what do I want? The pickelhaube is an amazingly aesthetic creation and its unfortunate that there are SO many wonderful variations. Because it obviously makes you want them all.

When I look at anything coming out of Prussia, it always has that classic German look. The Prussian style seems to embody the Imperial German spirit. But that doesn't discount the beauty of Saxon and Bavarian (and others) models.

If you had to choose one war used model, what would it be? Not taking into consideration rarity, value, etc, but just for its look and historical context.

I'm definitely leaning towards a 1915 Prussian infantry model. The shiny brass and features of earlier models are desirable, but the 1915 model reveals the problems a nation faced when going to war with a parade helmet.

I favour the Prussian M1915, because it was worn by more boys than any other helmet, and it honours more because it is the most common. soldiers of other states wore the Prussian Eagle, shown in many period photos, so in my mind, the lowly Prussian M1915 represents more history than any other helmet.

For what you're looking for the Prussian Enlisted 1915 Pickelhaube is perfect. You can still find a good complete example in the $500.00-$600.00 range. Good luck with the hunt.

I'm quite partial to the M15 Prussian as well; but I also like the M15 Garde, Wurttemberg, and Saxon variations of those Pickelhaubes. 2nd favorite would be the M95s and 3rd would be the Frano-Prussian War era M1867s.

On the other hand, if you have a few extra bucks to hand, this has to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing ..............

Forgot to mention; I personally like enlisted man's Pickelhaubes better than the officer's models.

That's a great pair of 'haubs there Robin.

I was actually just reading about the death's head regiment today and saw sketches of the plates. Definitely an amazing helmet.
