Help on WW1 bread bag please?

Just found this bread bag for sale and wondering what you guys think of it. I like it, but there are replacement buttons at the top and the internal center strap seems to be missing (I think). But the buttons look like they may have been field replacements, based on the look of them and the string used to attach them.

Thoughts?

It looks like a decent example for a display, the buttons could be replaced with the correct ones, and the missing internal strap would not be noticed on a manequin, the important thing would be the price, as it has issues.

PS I would expect period replacements to be the standard buttons, as they would have been available, but it is possible that the smaller buttons allowed the straps to come unbuttoned, and the soldier replaced them with the larger buttons that he may have scavanged from a civilian garment, but this is all story telling, it sounds good, but can not be verified.

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to replace the buttons. The threading on the ones on there looks pretty old (although its hard to tell until its in hand). I would hate to remove buttons and thread that was done by an owner in the field.

I do not think I would get in a hurry to change anything, there is a plausable explaination, and if it is on a display, the buttons will not stand out too much, most people would not even notice (for years, I had a WWII vintage breadbag on my manequin, and I was suprised that only a few noticed)

Yeah, that's my feeling too. It has a 1916 date and maker stamp on the center outside strap, and a handwritten name on the inside of the bag that is supposedly from the original owner. It's pretty faded, so its plausible.

But I've been trying to find a decent breadbag, and if some day down the road I can upgrade and recoup my investment, then that's fine with me.

In an ideal world the breadbag would be all original with owner names and numbers and regiment markings and what have you.

And free!!! If I am honest, I would probably grab it if I had the chance if I needed a breadbag (which I do) You usually can not pay too much, you just buy it too early.

Yeah, that's always the case it seems. I'm going on a trip this weekend to several antique stories in two states and I'm sure I'll buy this bag first, then find a bunch of them in perfect shape on the road somewhere.

Of course, I'll buy those too, and then hide from my wife.
