Mailed Steel Helmets

I thought you helmet collectors might like to see this photo. I had never seen it before. An American field post station with mailed souvenir German helmets.
Just posted on the German "Feldgrau" website by "Hampshire Regiment". I found it interesting to see all the various ways they were taped, wrapped and bagged.

I remember a few years ago an argument here where someone was arguing that sometime in 1918 the order came to paint cammo on the helmets, and that this was to a large extent done... I always doubted this.

I get the feeling sometimes that a lot of the German camo was done by Americans.

To my eyes I see what I would call at least 5 probable camos in that stack, with maybe 1/2 of all in the photo covered or obscured that is about the ratio that I might expect.

I have no idea what % of German helmets were camo painted by the Germans during the war ....but I believe that it was a fairly high (10-30%??) . I think that the Offensive of 1918 and aftermath thru the Summer and Fall was the major time frame for this and there were regulations published addressing this.
