    Chris,

The Land Gendarmerie (or Landes Gendarme) whch they are also called were not military; they were rural police. There were two types of these units, mounted which look exactly like Garde Dragoner and foot, which look exactly like Garde Grenadier. The "Foot" or Fußgendarmen had the round peak and the "mounted" or Berittene Gendarmen the square peak. They originally started out with an Alter Art Grenadier eagle, but then the Guard Star was introduced in 1905. The majority of these LG helmets are impressed with dates ranging from early 1889 to mid 1890.

      Thanks Tony,

I have that book but have not ever been able to find any pictures of them except for the ones in there but they all have feld covers on their helmets (if I remember correctly). Also why would rural police wear the helmet of the Garde Dragoner ? The Garde eagle is an elite badge is it not. What is elite about the rural police ? Does seem a little strange ?

Anyone have any pictures they can post here ?

My helmet has a square peak so it is the mounted type but no date

They wore the uniform of the Garde Dragoner so Mike (nzef1940)'s helmet could also have been worn by these LG police but his helmet would represent a private purchase NCO or 1 year volunter helmet for the Garde Dragoner or the LG police ???

      Many thanks, Chris

Period photos of the LG are out there, but not being a Polizei collector, I don't search them out. You are correct though, if you had two helmets, identical, side-by-side, and one was marked LG and one had no markings, (like the private purchase one that started this thread) they could both be LG.

But, the unmarked or private purchase one could be Garde Dragoner Regt. Nr. 1. These LG marked Police helmets cause a ton of confusion on the market as sellers think they are military when they are not.

They wore the Pickelhaube of the Garde Infanterie or Dragoner, but the Waffenrock was Polizei.

Thanks again Tony, you have explained this nicely for me

Are the LG helmets hard to find or do they turn up ?

The spike on mine untwists to allow for a parade trichter, dont think police examples had this feature.

Yes my spike also untwists to allow for a "parade trichter" and yes I believe that the police did wear one on parade but perhaps Tony could confirm,

Both mounted and non mounted Prussian Landgendarmerie officer wore a parade plume (black)

LG 11 stand for Landgendarmerie issued 1911

Here a non mounted officer on display and a mounted (square visor) on a photo

Interesting Gerd, and thanks for posting, without those unit stamps any one would assume Garde Infantry EM/NCO.

However my helmet is finished in a classic private purchase high standard military configuration, and I have no reason to believe it is Police.

Here a copy of the regulations

                            Aktenstück R.1.
Vorschrift über Anzugsarten, Bekleidung und Ausrüstung 1905

(my issue is the personal one of Fuss-Gendarm Widdel. Beritt Nienburg, Offiziersdistrikt Hannover, 10. Gendarmerie-Brigade, Station Landesbergen )

There is absolute no reason why it should/could be Landgendarmerie!

It´s just one thing: a very nice helmet
