    Imperial gasmask canister?

    Picked this up the other day in a huge Militaria collection spanning late 1800's to WW2. Had no idea what it was, and after running it by on the Heer forum, was told it's a imperial Gas-mask canister. Apparently "rare and valuable", as commented by a respected association member.

    Amazing what one will drag out of a dusty basement sometimes

      That is the cannister for the M1915 Gummimaske, the rubber coated cloth mask. It is in pretty good condition, and if that is an original strap, it increases the value, although I have not seen a strap of that colour, the buckle does look original. They are not really rare, it is rare to find them with out a mask inside, but that does not increase the value.

        I agree with Gus, and would add that the pictures are too dark and murky to be absolutely sure about the straps. I've seen red straps on a few canisters, and own two with them. It seems that they were used mostly with later production model Gummimaske cans.

          straps are actually more of dark burgundy/brown color. I'll drag it outside when it's light out and take some natural lights shots.

          Straps have no glow via blacklight though, at least.

          People are paying good $ for them on fleabay it seems!

            Nice looking Gummimaske can.

            I have personally never seen the red straps before, the ones I have are the typical papercloth straps, but I see nothing wrong with your strap. As pointed out, the buckle is right.

            The fake straps I have seen look like the papercloth ones except they are probably made of something that looks like hemp fiber. Really course in comparrison and easy to recogonize.

            So your is probably A-Ok

              Here,s a quick pic of repop straps made by GWM. I,ve seen originals in blue and various colors before but always on a gummi can?

                They may not show up for sale often, but that does not make the rare. Nearly every WWI collection has an example, they may be harder to find than they were 20 years ago, but they are still rather plentyfull due to the fact that they were a popular souveneer for allied troops.
                Here is my example with original straps, they are off white linen, constructed much like the others show, I have only seen papercloth on M1917 cans.

                Here is a decent M15 can that did not have an M15 mask in it, but it did have a nice M16 Austrian mask The strap on the can is an old breadbag strap that I added to display it, shortly after that, I found a period photo with the same arrangment.

                Here is a can for the leather mask, that has a paperecloth strap.

                      I have an orginal can repainted with Great War strap on it. I thought it was an original at first.

                      Anyone knows where I can find a good can and strap let me know.

                        I've found far fewer Gummimaske canisters with their original straps compared to complete GM17 canisters.

                        Here are two examples of straps I've typically found on earlier cans, very similar to Eric's example above. They are made of good quality cloth and are sturdier and wider than later cloth or papercloth straps.

                          Although a GM17 can, here's my favourite ID can, also an MG job. The name Cichon is scratched into the canister in three areas for good measure, and also appears twice on the mask straps.
