Here,s the Garde helmet mentioned by William
I missed it but kept the photos. I dont know about you Gents but Iam having a hard time balancing this wonderful hobby and putting food on the table.
This helmet for me is a beauty even with the reattached pads.

Eric, I agree that there are more significant favorable aspects on this Gardehelm than questionable ones. There's a two year old thread on GHW that goes into some interesting details and variables on the painted shields. I put up pictures of my example, as well on that thread. The forum "lagrandguerre" just had a good discussion on this particular ebay helmet, if one can read a bit of French, with most really liking it, while some didn't like the paint and the application of the numeral.
I find no fault with the emblem and numeral, except that the top border of the shield is well below the centerline of the mounting lug vent. Most of the examples I have seen the top of the shield is usually tangent to this imaginary line. This gives a different appearance, I think, but the shield itself is a nice white-bordered version.

What I don't get is the camo paint was painted around/over the shield, and the numeral 8 was painted over the camo. It also looks like small areas of the white panels in the shield were touched up by the same color paint used to paint the numeral 8. I have my doubts on this one...

Hell I don't know anymore about those helmets. Looks touched up but also looks t have been painted all at once. Might have been an early attempt to camo the insignia a little bit too?

The location of the shield reminds me of the very few I saw in my youth. When I saw examples with the insignia high and future back, for me that,s when everything started to get blurry for me. Come on guy,s doesnt it look like the helmet was camoed and then the shield was period touched up to you.

I don't have any problem with the shield having camo paint on it. Afterall, the shields started to be painted on the helmets in the spring of 1918. The camo authorization didn't come until later, in mid summer. The original company numbers were painted in red, black or white. Most of them were repainted when the camo was added. Two of mine were repainted with white numbers. You can still see the outline of the original number under the camo. To me, this is a perfectly good example.

The top edge of the shield is normally even with the bottom of the vent lug. This one is a bit low, but the style is right.

If they weren't so darn much money, I would have bought this one.

I agree with the other fans of this helmet. I liked it the instant I saw it. To my eyes, it actually looks like the old shield was completely overpainted when it was camoulfaged and an new one painted overtop. As for the company number, I would add that it's always possible that it didn't have one prior to the camo overpaint. Not all Garde helmets did.

I think someone bagged a fantastic helmet for a very good price.

This is my tale of woe regarding this lid:
I forgot when it finished because of work. I was sitting with me tv dinner on me lap watching British football. AH! ME HELMET!
The dinner went flying and I ran to the computer with 20seconds to go and punched in a massive bid in panic and missed the commit button by 3 sec. Dam!
To add to the tears, I had me dinner all over the living room floor.
Life sucks sometimes.

Ahh sorry Eric. That does suck and I think we've all been there. I think my internet went down once with minutes to go. For the above poster, it went for a mere 1,100.00
