      I'm just guessing since I've never seen one, and it's hard to judge the size, but how about it being a spare gas mask canister carrier, and because of the strap, it's Austrian. Looks like a nice pick-up, Eric.

        I have a spare filter pouch I dont think its one of those and the stamp say,s Fulda. It looks like it was never used, maybe the grunts didnt know what to make of it either!!

          My first impression is that it could be a carrier for one of those round artillery compasses, the type that were used on a tripod. Normally, they had leather cases (also round on the bottom), but it looks to me like an Ersatz version of that.
