They were very pliable when they cvame out of the ground, but if they are allowed to dry they will be as hard as a rock. For this reason they are kept in a plastic bag with moisture until they can be conserved - if that is what they end up doing to them. There were also uniform parts found: two pair of red piped trousers. They are also stored the same way. Actually there was a lot of non-metallic artifacts found in these pits.

        Eric,

The regional director of archaeology is in charge, but most of the people, like myself, are there as volunteers. It is a lot of fun.

          Hello,
I am new here, but I stumbled upon this post when looking for a match for some boots that I got. I originally bought them thinking they were WWII fallschirmjager, as they had nearly the same construction, but upon further inspection, I found that they had slight diffeences, not the least of which bieng the preseance of a 13th eyelet.

My ramlbing point is that they are near Identical to your Bergschuhe, the exception being the absence of stapms(probably faded away by now) and there being 13 eyelets, and no speedlacing. Is this something that was done in WWI or are they post war? And if any of this rings a bell, might you be able to tell how much they are worth?

I'll try and post pictures when I get around to it.

The 7 EE mark really confuses me, though. Everything about them screams German to me, but that marking would make it American or British, Right?

All I can tell you is that they are not WWI German.

Picking up this old thread -- I have seen references to M1893 Schnürschuhe, which were clearly side-laced as shown above; M1901 which were allegedly front-laced; and M1914 Schnürschuhe which were clearly front-laced.

-- Can anyone confirm (with photos if possible) existence of M1901 Schnürschuhe?

-- Also, for pre-war and wartime recruit depot garrison use, were black private purchase shoes/ankle boots common amongst NCOs and Other Ranks for wear with dunkelblau?
