Shawn, here are mine albeit from a feldgrau tunic, most I have seen for dunkleblau have been "non removalble" looking at yours I would take a stab at them not being period or correct

Swallows Nests

Paul - many thanks for posting your set. Since my long time Third Reich uniform collecing focus (Third Reich) deviated into solely collecting musician items - to include Imperial, Weimar period, and Third Reich - I've been trying to put the study on swallows nests as a special interest focus. It can be a bit frustrating to identify with confidence the time frame of manufacture and organization(s) which used a given tresse/color pattern and, additionally the many published works on various organizations - military as well as civil/paramilitary - don't usually include a comprehensive treatment of the topic. And there are MANY different tresse patterns, tresse widths, nest shapes, backing fabrics - even within the same organization - colors, number of vertical bars, length of fringe (where used) etc.

With regard to Imperial nests, I do have Kraus book on Feldgrau uniforms but desperately need to pick up additional reference books covering dress uniforms of the Imperial period (any recommendations?!) All of the Imperial nests shown in Kraus book have 8 vertical bars of tresse, with the exception of trumpeters who wore nests with 7 vertical bars oriented diagonally. But....again, I don't have a reference book dealing with the dunkelblau uniforms.

Referring to the swallows nests of this thread: I have a number of 7 vertical barred swallows nests that I believe to be Third Reich SA and which use the exact same type of patterned tresse as these red ones, but perhaps this tresse was also used during the Imperial and/or Weimar period for one or more organizations as well?

As for the mating of the nests to the uniform (e.g. sewn into the head seam of the shoulder vs. removability), I do know it would be very unusual (and invite suspicion as to originality) to see a removable nest on a Third Reich period military waffenrock/dress tunic. Military regulations actually specified removable types for field tunic....permanent attachment to dress tunics.

Can you tell me how many vertical bars of tresse there are on the schwalbennester? And....what is the fabric/color on the reverse? Wonderful waffenrock - the attraction to Imperial uniforms is becoming abundantly clear to me!

These nests are removeable?
