Thanks - what is the meaning of the flap, secured with the "pin"?

it means "fussartillerie" ... the model before this one has the additional "flap" too

yours seems to be lacking the wooden frame inside

Yes - but what is the meaning of this flap, what was its use?

                Hi Gran
I mailed your photos to a couple of close friends of mine. The consensus is
the pack is indeed Artillery. The flap is for hanging on ie: support wagon rail
at the same time allowing easy excess to the pack contents. Hope this helps.

                Eric

This does not make sense IMO: Why not simply hang the tornister to whatever by simyly using the carrying-straps?

                    I agree Gran
It was just a suggestion because of the single stud/button. Anyone else have an idea?
Wish I could tag along to these markets you go to. You pick up rare items!

Of course I am thankfull for your help.

Yesterday I have viseted some WWI-collectors, and we were talking about that, too - suddenly the idea came to my mind, that this flap could be meant to unbotton, and move to the other side, and botton there. That way it will cover the carrying straps, when used to carry on the leather grip. Just an idea of course, no proof so far.

                              Hello Gran
I found this interesting photo. I was looking for pictures with soldiers wearing the early glass or unusual water bottles on their breadbags. Could your backpack be hooked under the canvas at the back of the wagon? I,ll keep looking and asking for more info.

                              Regards
