    Pricing felt helmets

    Hi,

For some reason i never seem to get felt helmets with intact liners.

    A theoretical question....

If a Felt helmet costs 1000 currency units with liner.... how many currency units would it cost without its liner?

    Best

Chris I think it would depend on the plate.....also if its a Pickel, shako etc,

In theory it should be half as you are only getting half a helme

I bought this one a few years ago from the estand, I think it was $300.
The felt has all but disintegrated and the cover is stained with old blood but I'd never ever swap it for a mint one.

        Hi Chris,

You have an entirely different "bird" here, one that is not a felt helmet.

From viewing your pics, I would venture to say that you have an ersatz helmet with a cork body that has a fixed/non-removable cloth covering over the cork body. This type of helmet is a whole lot scarcer than the typical ersatz felt examples.

I agree with "Leibregiment", but would add that a missing liner reduces the price by at least 1/3 from my experience, and as much as 1/2 as he says.

Felt helmets can be steamed & blocked back into place. Unfortunately cork body helmets w/fixed cloth covers don't restore very well if they've been crushed or smashed in, especially if the cork is broken up. I'm not sure without handling your helmet, if the cork body is simply crushed in, or if it's broken up into smaller pieces. From viewing your nice pics, it looks like the cork has taken a pretty hard beating over the years. If it's simply pushed in, one can steam it back into place, and put it on a hat block form to let it dry back into proper form.

        Best Wishes,

Alan nailed it, the one photoed above is a much harder to find variation, that never had felt on it.

Personally I would nver buy a helmet without a liner, unless it was a rare plate or something. You are always goign to have a helmet that is missing a liner.

Felt haubes for the most part are not that rare, and if you look around should be able to find a complete one.

          Just My opinion

I think you helmet is brilliant
Beats a mint job that never saw combat in my book.
            Awesome history piece. congrats.
