    Battle Damaged Helmets

Is this possibly how many of the battle damaged helmets that are in so many people's collections and that are regularly being offered for sale came into being??? Cheers, Torsten.

I do not think they put the damaged helmets in a stock and waited for good collector prices. I guess the most damaged helmets were used again for example to make new steel etc.

But who knows.....Maybe some of those helmets found the way in collections.

I am pretty sure that many did ... by whatever means or diversions .... I would think that most of these helmets would have been put into some storage somewhere for someone to decide what to do with them, they got forgotten about and at some point later were re-discovered and maybe thrown away or whatever and many people will have picked some up as a souvenir .... it was the same way with many NVA items after the fall of the wall, etc. Cheers, Torsten.

there are a few battle damaged helms that i've come across and unless the damaged can be judged as authentic and dramatic, "appealing" if you will, i usually try to avoid having them in my collection. pick axe damage or fresh bullet wounds, etc, can be spotted a mile away.

i see an M18 cutout in the upper right of that picture and what looks like a size 60 helm right below it, what a shame...reminds me of that scene from 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf' when after Burton "kills" off their imaginary sonny boy son, Taylor asks him 'did you have to do it George?' and his reply is 'yes Martha i had to'. i guess that helmet "killing" had to be done
