    Super helmet.
Some of the panels look touched up. Whether period or not no matter,
    I still like it.

All the paint looks done at the same time. I just think he was in hurry when he was doing. You will see the original paint under camo. I just think this guy was not an artist like some other.

IMO the yellow panels are completely original and have not been touched up or painted over. The other panels have been touched up and/or painted over as well as some of the black painted divider lines... This paint does appear to be very old. Might have been done by the German Soldier himself, or a WWI Veteran post war. I do like the looks of it though...

The one that intruds over the black line and almost into the yellow panel yes. Clearly it was put on over the black line when it should be under the black line.

It looks to me as if all color panels "except yellow" were painted over... to include the black divider lines. I'm still leaning towards post war applied. Take a close look at the green painted panels... there appears to be another color underneath parts of them.

                      both are nice originals

as for the overpainting, i wouldn't be suprised if this helmet was refurbished by a comrade of a fallen soldier who had on it a different camo scheme, or perhaps the original camo was redone due to seasonal changes, etc. we'll never know, but i like what i see in it.

That's what I was saying. The Camo has been touched up. Could this have been done war time? Sure but, this kind of helmet has to be to relegated to suspect status. I can't call it a good helmet but finding any M16 at a garage sales is a feat.

It's not a bad helmet I agree much of what you see is original like the yellow. Touched up yes. When who knows but I point out the field gray under the green SHOULD be in better condition if it was done near the front. I would say the helmet rusted some before the touch up.

Looking and holding this helmet, everything looks done the same way. The paint is applied the same way. I see that it was overpainted but I think it is was done war time, the paint is very old, and if someone was trying to make helmet better looking he would do all colors not just some. I think was refurbished too at some point during the war.
I just like everything that came with it, and the story.

If it was done at the front the helmet probably was not in great condition to begin with, probably had some mosture trapped in when it got painted or dirt that would cause rust to start even if was painted over.
I am talking from experience about painting cars, if you do not do the preparation for paint good, you would have a paint coming off and rust too.

If you're keeping it, and you're happy with it that's all that matters. No one will prove if it was painted wartime or post war. You also asked about value... if you plan on selling it you might be surprised...

                                Guy,s
I really like this lid. I was wondering maybe at some point it could of had a winter camo pattern judging by the crown.
The bluey/green looks modern latex to me. Shame, should be removed.
