It has that more round shape that reminds me of a Youth canteen.
But I,ve never seen that screw top before without a chain. Clip looks
post ww1.
Is the bottle very light more so than a WW1 ally canteen and easily dented?
Eric
Thanks Scott.

I can't say that I have seen anything quite like it either. The cover is German, but I can't recall seeing a screw cap that was not connected to the leather rig in some way. Perhaps the cap is a replacement? The canteen seems to fit the cover, so one would think they belong together. The leather looks like the M17 pattern that buttoned to the cover.

Robb, Eric, Chip, I put this on the political forum & had a reply thats its nothing like a hj canteen from a collector thats had many hj canteens also this canteen came from france & the seller told me it has always been this way, the cap fits the bottle perfect with wide pitched threads compared to the finer thread pitch on a MO7 canteen, also as chip says the cover fits well as does the leather hanger, i,m just wondering if this could by a very seldom seen variant WW1 Canteen?
Regards Scott.

I'm not into canteens, but as with pickelhauben, it's maybe possible that this might be a private purchase canteen, since there are no markings at all.
As you all know, Officers, NCO's and Einj. Freiwilliger had to purchase almost everything, from uniform, boots, pickelhauben and almost every piece of personal equipment...

But Iam not sure if officers had to or preferred to purchase their own canteens?
Unless it was a fancy job for Schnaps!
Cant be for service can it? The top would be lost in 5mins.
Looks none military to me with an added period cover, and strap.A camping piece /youth canteen not HJ Scott, sorry.
