2-Rare Saxon Buckles: World Record Prices

Hey Guys, here are two super rare nickel-silver Saxon buckles that sold on eBay USA & eBay Germany respectively over the past few days. Both were unit marked.

This type of nickel-silver buckle with the brass Saxon center was only worn by the Two Saxon Jaeger Reg'ts & the One Saxon Pioneer Regt, if I remember correctly. And to find these two unit marked, and being sold within a few days of eachother is quite rare indeed. What are the odds of that???

I know that unit marked buckles are very hard to find, and these two unit marked examples are the creme-de-la-creme! Plus the fact that both are mfg'd by exceptionally rare makers helped push the price up also.

Check out the links, and the prices. Make sure that you're sitting down before you look!!!

    All the Best,

    Alan Schaefer

P.S. 612 Euros equals about $817 USD. Astonishing, right?

Good post. I tend to look at things in relation to other different but similar things. For instance the price range for these two buckles is pretty close to the range for say a common marked in VG condition SS EM buckle would sell for and a rarer maker or real nice condition SS EM buckle would sell for.

There would have been around 1 million SS EM buckles made.....so I guess these Imperial buckles could be considered a steal at the price that they brought.

Hello Thanks for posting. I only have one Saxon buckle and it's unit marked 78A. are unit marks common on Saxon Buckles. Kirby

I saw a guy pay big money for a WWI hate belt & buckle just a week ago or so so I guess anything is possible. He had some help though..... some local Old Guy talked him into it. Iwegains are easy.

Yes, Jerry has me on a Prussian Telegrapher Buckle in Brass that I purchased w/a hate belt. I really appreciate your advice Jerry, Thank You!!!

And yes, unit marked buckles are getting really tough to find.

I had one of these years ago (back in the mid-1980's) which was not unit marked nor maker marked, but mine was in exceptionally nice condition. I vaguely remember selling it for the going rate of about $25 back then. I've only seen a handful of these Saxon examples in nickle-silver since that time. Boy do I ever kick myself for letting that one go!!!

I have 2-Saxon buckles in steel construction in my collection. 1-is an odd two-piece construction. I also have 1-Saxon buckle in brass. None of the three have unit marks...

I'll add the pics from these two eBay auctions, as eventually they won't be accessible after 60 or 90 days, when eBay pulls the auctions down from their files, and the links above will be useless.

P.S. There was only 1-Saxon Pioneer Reg't, making this a very scarce buckle. This example below sold for $541.00 USD on April 21, 2010.

                    Alan,

Actually, there were two Saxon Pioneer Battalions before the war (12. & 22.). During the war, more battalions and many independent companies were formed.

There were three Saxon Jäger Battalions (12. 13. 15). The Jäger Batl.Nr.15 is quite rare. It was disbanded before the war to form part of one of the newly created Saxon infantry regiments.

I agree with Phild, in that these pieces are comparatively under-priced. When you look at the bidding on the German auction, it really was only driven out of the expected price range by two bidders.

Saxon Jager Battalion 15 became part of Infanterie Regiment 181 (Saxon Infanterie Regiment 15) on the 1 April 1900.

A rare buckle and very nice find indeed,

Thanks for the great additional information Chip & Chris. Yes, I also agree with phild & you two guys that both these buckles are incredibly rare, and yes they were purchased at a very reasonable price when considering their extreme rarity. Especially when comparing their scarcity & realized prices to the availibility of SS buckles and what they bring, as noted by phild.

As mentioned earlier, this is probably only the 3rd buckle of this type (Saxon in nickle silver with a brass center) that I've seen available for purchase since the late 1980's, 20++ years ago! And these two were the only unit marked examples I've seen available ever. It's quite ironic that they both came up for sale within a matter of a couple of days of eachother!

                        Thanks guys!

                        All the Best,

An antique dealer, showed me some military memorabilia from an estate clearance sale. Amongst the various German items was a Saxon silver nickel buckle with a gilted brass center, unit marked "100 R".

I thought it worth adding here for reference that the 1st Saxon "Lieb-Grenadier Regiment", number 100 also wore this type of rare buckle.

The 2nd Saxon "Grenadier Regiment", number 101 might have worn it as well but I have never seen a unit marked example to confirm this,

                          Chis

                            Chris,

Thanks for adding the Saxon Leib Grenadier Rgt. Nr. 100. The Grenadier Rgt. Nr.101 wore a standard infantry (brass with nickel roundel) buckle. So, before 1914, there were actually three battalions of Jägers, two battalions of Pioniere and one full infantry regiment that wore the nickel/brass buckle.

Percentage-wise this is a small portion of the Saxon contingent, but I would not call these buckles rarities, but rather scarcities. Perhaps that just cutting it too finely, but given the possible numbers, I think correct.

The prices reflect the desirability of the units and the ever growing group of imperial buckle collectors. When you add to those factors, the unit markings, maker marks and condition considerations, you get a perfect storm for the seller of such a buckle.

                            Chip

                              Hello,

Really funny to see this post coming back. I was also following this 15 Jager buckle years ago and by looking on Ebay DE last month, I saw this one for sell again! Here is the link: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Koppelschloss...item5ae57b1f15 This time 452 Euros, still too much for me as I don't like too much 1847 Model and the JR 15 was not participating in the war.

                              The pictures:

For me no doubt at all, it is the same as presented before but it has been cleaned...

Concerning marking, I think they are not so scarce for the Saxon buckle, for the other land they are! Some exemple:
