    MGSs Helmet JOKE!

    Gentlemen
This fake thing showed its ugly head again as it continues on its globle tour ripping off collectors. This time on Ebay.fr.
I feel for the buyer of this 'THING'

A cleaned, and repainted relic shell. I agree... what an ugly fake!

What's the max price it's sold for? Cause it's so bad you almost deserve what you get for bidding.

By the way Eric. I was in the process of placing a bid on your helmet and by the time I clicked it the bid was past my bid. I had to hold the bid as I won a Japanese bayonet the same morning.

I am holding out for an M17 Greenie with a nice liner in it now.

I feel for the 'lucky winner'. A lot of people out there are,nt aware of Forums like this. Remember Scott a few days ago with a "Guys, What do you think?" It would save a lot of heartache.

            Ok William,
But the bayo is,nt a fake.I was expecting $300 for it. So I did good for once. Most of my items sell for less than I paid for them. Dont lump me in with faker jerks ripping people off!
            Cheers

Clearly the bayo you sold was not a fake and I never implied that. Just because I asked you a question on a fake thread does not mean I was implying???

I'd have bid if I was not all tied up in other stuff. It looks like a bayo that was set to sell for about 500. All I was saying.

It has several twins. I bet it makes the rounds every time the new owner shows it off to the right collector who knows his stuff LOL

There are a couple of advanced collectors on this Forum with the expertise to comment on this decal. Let's hear your honest opinions please...

Is there any period photographic evidence that helmets with the MG insignia even existed? Or, failing that, does anyone have an example in their collection that has impecable provenance? In lieu of the provenance does anyone have an example that they think is original that they would be willing to post for discussion? Does anyone know where the example in Baer's book came from? So many questions, so few answers.

These helmets have become the equivalent of the EGA marked Marine Corps camouflage covers - without any photograhic evidence to date, some people believe they existed in WWII, some don't.

Excellent points you made apart from some collectors suggesting WW2? on WW1 helmets?
A friend of mine many many years ago tried to buy the Powers example shown in Baer,s book but no dice at any price. But this same collector of Maxim related items had a helmet just as nice. In fact when he sold his collection he offered it to me for $2500. Its a collecting mistake of mine I,ve never got over.I know it went to a collector on the East coast of the United States.I have seen photos of MGSs units wearing the insignia, but after talking recently with fellow collectors the pictures could have been WW1, immediate postwar or early twenties. The originals I,ve seen all have the gun applied in profile (black on camos and white on fieldgrey helmets) one even had a 08/15 applied.People who make copies make the mistake of painting what looks like the MGSs sleeve insigina.
Originals dont look at all like this the 'Gun' being crudely painted.
These helmets are incredibly rare and jealously guarded by collectors for fear of being copied.I recently received one of my helmets back from Germany after being authenticated, it passed and is pictured on the thread 'show us your WW1 camos' page 2.

It was a conflation of sorts: I was referring to WWII Marine Corps camouflage helmet covers and the supposed controversy regarding the EGA stamp.
