Hello I guess this is a model 1886 helmet. The visors are made of cork and are missing about 20-30%. the rest of the helmet isn't in bad shape. Would this Saxon crest be proper for this type helmet? Thank Kirby

Kirby, I believe this helmet dates to 1914-1915 period being one of the ersatz cork examples. The plate looks to be a replacement and is missing the leather thongs to hold the plate on. I believe it to be a replacement because the plate is not formed well to the front which I would expect to see since these usually had field covers and would have been tougher to put on and take off with the sharp edges of the plate sticking out. This plate could be used early on say 1914 but then they went to more subdued finishes as the war progressed. Mike.
Looks like a nice and rarer type helmet though with what looks like original chinstrap and kokardes!

Kirby, definitely a Saxon helmet by the look of the underneath. Probably not be the original plate but looks to be the right one to bring it back. Saxon plates are tough to find so I think you did well. I wouldn't try to bend the plate, just leave as is. I believe the plate is Reserves also. Nice. Mike.
