IMO This is a truly wonderful piece. It has everything I personally like to see in a regulation 1917 helmet cover. The only thing I dont get is the profusion of 'Funky' ink stamps. Clearly the help of Mr Minx and Gents of equal authority are needed here. I would like to say the owner does,nt deserve it, laying in the snow like that. As my dear old Mother used to say "He needs a clip round the ear!"

I would not get too excited, these are very easily faked with old sacking a few tears and FAKE stamps. The Eastern Europeans are churning these out at present. I was offered a very similar example recently and sent it back upon receipt. I really think the stamps have over egged the pudding, if you know what I mean.

I would have to say about this one that it is leaps above the rest of the fakes if it indeed is a fake.

I've been looking for one of these for about 20 years and it turned out that 99 % of the ones you see are fake. This cover however looks very convincing... Nevertheless I wouldn't buy it for the following reasons:
                      - the funky ink stamps, as Eric calls them, are just to much, especially the little prussian eagle in pic 6
                      - just to many stamps for an item like this (indeed to much eggs in the pudding...)
                      - in pic 5 the edges of the fabric look freshly cut and aged
                      - also in pic 5 the stitching looks to new in comparison with the overall wear of the cover
                      - the tread of the stitching is to fine in comparison with the fabric of the cover... It looks brand new in comparison with the repair on the right hand side of the cover
                      - in pic 1 the color of the right front is darker than the richt back ... no problem on it's own, but the separation is just on the seam... that's strange, why don't these have the same discoloration?
I know it's a bit hard to explain, but all these points together make it suspicious to me... but hey, that's just my two cents...
For the owner of this cover, I hope I'm completely wrong and I also hope that some knowledgable guy's can convince us wether it's an original or a very good reproduction...
Of course better, larger and sharper pictures sure would help a lot to determine what it is...

Most likely you are right and not wrong.

I saw some replicas at the Show of Shows, and they were made from old sacking and other fabrics. They were unmarked and down right scary. I really wish I would have dropped the 50 bucks and bought one to show you guys. The one was made from old Italian fabric...it was spooky how good it looked. I think they have even used original period hooks, or at least well made and aged pieces.

The material is too thick and hasnt thinned out over the last nearly 100 years . I would give it a swerve . Rob

This one is a little scary. I don't like the stamps either, just too many. The rough ends of the inside also bother me bit because pickelhaube covers are very clean inside and would presume these should be too. Just too many issues to make me comfortable with it. Mike.
