I thought that the price was insane when I could have bought them for around $350 each (several decades ago), but when you consider that a really nice WWII Army DD helmet sells for nearly 4k (I've seen them bring more) and nice but not near minty SS SD sells for that price and more....the frontal plate is MUCH rarer than either....so I don't what price is really too much when conpared to other things.

often rarity has little to do with the price. take Soviet WWII lids as an example, the ones sporting a red star on the front are much rarer than any SS or Camo helmet, yet they don't command nearly the prices these do. it's all about what appeals to the collectors...

I agree with you about rarity as it relates to price/value. Rarity has to be combined with demand in order to have a bearing on value.

If the frontal plates were in demand say the same degree as SS helmets I would suspect that they would be bringing somewhere between 10 and 20K each.

Another point to consider is that the number of items that we see on the market over a given period of time (months, years or even decades) is not always a true reflection of the actual number or % of those items that exist. There are thousands (many thousands)of FJ helmets out there but look at how few real ones you will see for sale in a year on the web or at the Max/SOS. The better examples are in collections and rarely are sold on the open market...some collections have dozens of the them and a few have over a hundred of them.
