I don't think so. I think some lines were on the helmet.

It's a colorized picture. In those days it was a common practice to touch up pictures because the originals were not always sharp enough. When you have a combunation of both, it can look like this picture.
The lines are not exactly added, but they were meant to highlight the original lines...

Adler is correct, it's an old technique where someone just painted on top of a B&W picture to colorize it.

I have seen a lot of colorized photos before. Most of them were large photos. This one is interesting because it is a small post card size.
