An M18 mit Ohrenauschnitt

Since we are into M18 helmets lately, I want to present you my M18 mit Ohrenausschnitt, size 64, produced by Eisenhüttenwerke Thale A.G., Thale /Harz.
There's still a lot of the original felt camouflage present. Applying the felt finish was in those days a very special technique and it was used to take the glare of the paint away. The liner pins have the standard feldgrau color because the helmets were painted first and afterwards the liners were put in the shell with standard liner pins. The other helmets with this felt camo I've seen were all done the same way, so I'm quite sure it was done this way...
The name and date on the chinstrap appear to be: W. Beuster Neubrandenburg 1918

The reason you will not see a lot of these is just that there are not many left I gues... Some sources say that all M18 cut outs had originally this felt finish, other sources are stating that only 2 or 3 thousand had this finish as a kind of try out but it was suspended because the costs were to high... Does anyone have information about this?

After looking at this helmet a few time the quetion comes up, we're the germans trying to create a finish that did away with the need for a helmet cover? It almost looks like a cotten weave on the close up.

Also can you translate to English mit Ohrenausschnitt for me?

William, they took away the glare of the painted finish by spraying felt on the surface of the helmet shell. In fact this was a very good camo, only it was rubbed of fast when the helmet saw intensive use. Of course a helmet cover wasn't needed anymore when you had a helmet with this felt finish...
It looks indeed a bit like a cotton weave because felt is actually shredded hair...

Also can you translate to English mit Ohrenausschnitt for me?

Ohrenausschnitt means ears cut out...
