And all that time I had no idea you could get stuff from WWI. Only helmet I ever saw was a WWI M16 in a gun shop when I was 8 and up and a 20 dollar relic M40 I bought when I was 12 in North Park San Diego.

I know what you mean. When I was growing up in England. In this Pub there was this incredible Pichelhaube on the shelf high up behind the bar. I remember it was a large size MINT.But the owner would never sell it. One day it was gone, I asked and was told after I kept going on about it he realized it was worth something so he took it out and sold it!!

I note the cord is not run though the pads. Were they issued to soldiers in that do it yourself manner?

I'm convinced it was, as the holes for the liner cord are absolutely untouched. In the seventies and eighties I have seen a few other helmets with the cords attached this way...
By the way, the other M18's are also beautifull...

Great helmets guys, thanks for sharing! They did the same thing with the enlisted pickelhaube, having the leather lace looped through only one hole, and tied in a particular manner, almost like the winding on a hangman's noose.

I remember those good 'ol Manion's days as well, and actually worked there as a "describer/catalog writer" for a couple of years in the mid/late 1990's. It was unbelievable to see the volume of items come through there every day!

To return this thread to the original subject, Adler 1, this is perhaps the remarkable German helmet I have seen from World War I in over 50 years of collecting. The condition is as mint as any I have ever seen. For the piece to have survived in this condition from 1918, so many circumstances of perfect preservation have to occurred in sequence that it almost seems impossible to achieve. Yet, your beautiful photos can't deny its existence.

I am at this point in my travels, not easily impressed by things in the collecting areas, but your helmet due to its amazing state of preservation, just floors me!
