                Kavallerie Rgt. 5

                Robin,

lovely collection of headgear! Do you not think perhaps that the Kavallerie Rgt. 5 cap would in fact have been worn somewhat earlier, around 1919/20 during the transition from old army to Reichsheer? 1923 seems a bit late for people to still be swanning around in Imperial headdress.

                Regards
                Glenn

They wore these well into the 20s. If you have Woolley's book on German Uniforms 1918-23, look at page 167 and you'll see an NCO from Reiterrregiment 3 wearing one of these coloured caps with his field-grey uniform as a member of the Zieten 'tradition' squadron. The state cockade over the republican eagle was introduced on 29th September 1919 and continued in wear until March, 1933. Officer cords came in in February 1927. This cap can reasonably be dated to sometime between 1919 and 1927, so 1923 is an approximation.

                  Best regards,

                  Robin.

PS - as a point of interest, the LHR1 cap and the Weimar one belonged to the same man, who stayed in the army and transferred from LHR1 after it was disbanded to Kav.Rgt.5. Both caps came from his family. The Weimar one clearly shows where the old imperial badges were removed and the new ones inserted.

                    Reichsheer

                    Hi Robin,

yes I have seen the Knötel print. I just have not seen any photographs of bona fide Reichsheer units (Freikorp excluded) apart from that print for later in the twenties. Of course just about anything went in those turbulent times I suppose.

                    Regards
                    Glenn

Would you mind posting a photo of the interior of your 1. Leibhusaren visor cap? Thanks.

I LOVE SKULLS I had a wonderful Leib Husar rgt2 officer's visor cap with white silk lining in near mint condition that I let someone talk (trick) me out of. My fault. Looked much like yours. Currently, I have a Brunswick 92nd Inf Rgt officer's cap and I am still looking for the all the other skull visor caps.

I used to ask people how they could ever part with an item. Now, I know it is temporary madness we all go through when our interest changes.
                              BTW, your caps are awesome.
