The first looks like a good Tsapka that has under gone some less than professional maintenance. The second is a great looking Garde Tsapka.

      Hello,

On the first one, side posts for chinstrap are not matching with an old model, must be with screws.

        Thanks for all the replies...

Are there any good books on Uhlan Tschapkas that you can recommend?

The second czapka is a very nice one; for enlisted ranks of the 1st or 3rd Garde Ulans. Schiffer publishes a number of good photo books on Imperial German headgear, the one with the most detail is "Imperial German Military Officers' Helmets & Head Dress 1871-1918", by Thomas N.G. Stubbs.
If you can find a copy, a great reference is 'L'Armee Allemande en 1914", by Didier Laine, in French, but also English & German text. It's a great reference source.

Perhaps THIS page will help a little. Not a book, but it might help with some of your questions.

The best book for cavalry headgear you can get is:

Herr, U, Nguyen, U. (2006) The German Cavalry from 1871 to 1914 Verlag Militaria, Vienna

If you do not have, order it from Verlag Militaria immediately. It is outstanding.

              Tony,
Thanks for reminding me to buy that book on German Cavalry. I have the one Verlag did on the Austro-Hungarian Army; it's oustanding. But then, so is your website.

                Jens Nguyen

I have to second T&K on the book recommendation. It's a gorgeous volume, just like the others in the series.

I don't remember which reenactor site I saved this picture from, but I think the person impersonating an officer of the 1st GUR is Nguyen himself, or his Doppelganger (what are the odds that the Doppelganger is also into imperial cavalry militaria?):

From the brief bios inside the book cover, it's easy to form the impression that Herr and Nguyen had been friends since they were kids and did everything together. I wonder if either of them visits this forum.

Yes thats Jens Nguyen some years ago as a Leutnant. Now he is Rittmeister.
Most uniforms, helmets etc. shown in these book are from the Kavalleriemuseum Vornholz, the greatest private collection of imperial german cavallry.
