Please check: Un issued German fieldgray trousers

Saw them on ebay with an hour to go. Have since contaced seller. Still for sale and he wants A LOT for them.

I don't know anything about cloth items. Want to start here with opinions. All I know is they look too good to be true.

I have a million photos but will start with just 5 or 6. Can post more on request if needed.

    William

                8. Any idea of what one would pay for pants like this IF original?

Wilhelm, aside from the mothing they appear in great condition. Actually too great for pants that would have to be over 90 years old. Personally, I think they are good quality replicas but must admit that they simply look too good is my main reason for stating that. I have seen replicas made by Michael Janke of Germany that look very similar to these, I feel these might be from him.
Get other opinions though as I have been wrong plenty of times before.

William, I also have a feeling these are reproductions. The construction material (liner band, back waist belt, etc) look like new material to me. I would be very leary of these and I tend to agree with Denny also. Also the wrinkling at the bottom looks a lot like the wrinkling caused by leg wraps which would lead me to believe a re-enactor might have worn these recently or they were part of a mannequin but I would lean towards the former. The buttons also show no wear or age from what I can see. I would expect some oxidation or rusting unless stored extremely well. I would pass. Mike.

That was my gut feeling too really. Even with only shelf wear stuff like that should have more age.

Seller wants something like 2 or 3 grand for them.

I won't comment on the details of the trousers since I'm not an expert on them. However, while the nice condition is something to consider, be careful not to over emphasize it. Over the years I've seen too many mint WWI US wool uniform items to use that as a guage in ruling out authenticity. Some of that stuff did survive in unused condition.

Now, maybe someone can find a pair just like this on of the reinactor sales sites. That would be convincing evidence they are bad.

I just don't get a good feeling with these though. Some unissued stuff did survive as Steve stated but $2-3K is a huge ticket to take that chance, especially on e-bay!! Mike.

I don't know how much uniform wool goes for I thought I've seen tunics and pant sets for about 1,600 range.
I have a reproduction kit and the pants really have that repro feel to them but I've never looked at originals in any detail.

William, M1910 field trousers (proper is probably M1907) are pretty scarce. Your estimate is pretty close. A mint pair could bring over $2K but you need a real inspection to make sure they are real. Mike.
