I posted this sword a short time ago with photos I received via email from the seller. Thanks again to all who previously provided comments. I bought the sword, and have a few more questions.
Here's the story. The seller was a furniture mover for a company in Hagerstown, Maryland 45 years ago. The people he moved that day had been in their residence for over 40 years. Some of the last items to be moved were in the attic, the sword being one of them. When he asked what to do with the sword, it was given to him by the family for doing a good job with the move. The family went on to tell him that their son (the WWI Veteran) was killed in an automobile accident years after the War, and the sword has been in the attic since then. The son told his family that he was given the sword by an Officer for rendering first-aid, and bandaging his wounds.
The blade on this sword is darn near perfect. The questions I have are as follows. There is a broken leather tab on the handle, what was that for? Back to the markings on the scabbard. I received a logical explanation for the T.B. 10, 1, 71 stampings near the throat, however; I also found 51 stamped on the tip of the scabbard. Does anyone have any idea what that number would mean? Lastly, there are some dents in the scabbard near the end... should I leave it like it is, or have it restored?
Thanks again for any information provided.
