    Pickelhaube with four frontal holes?

Is there any reason for this spike helmet to have four frontal holes? I do not believe any WWI spike helmets required four holes for securing a plate. Could this have been done during WWI?

    Thanks,
    Eddie

The distance between the holes on each side seem pretty extreme to me.

Sometimes additional holes were made during the period if needed by the fitting of a new front plate. If factory done the replacement holes would most likely have the metal grommets installed. I'm sure that not all extra holes made during the period of use did so sometimes it's just a judgment on when the extra holes were put into a helmet.
