Yes, I was fortunate enough to have been able to speak with many German WWI vets and had several in our Family that were AEF. Rats were brought up by many.

I used to talk and listen for hours with Brit Vets. They would say after a while the Trenches seem to breed a new species of these disgusting creatures, big, slimmey and only partly covered in fur (probably much like your last picture) and so brazen they would go after anything. In the remake of 'All Quiet...' the producer tried hard with a scene involving rats. But if the Old Boys were still around they would laugh and call these mice!
