Cloth covered Pickelhaube

    Cloth covered Pickelhaube

    Hi Guy's,
    Thought I would show you this Pickelhaube with a cloth cover. Any idea of date? There are no markings inside.

      1915 or later. I have most often seen these in photos worn by German troops in the Balkans.

            The front and rear visors have been hand stitched to the helmet body. The shape of the spike is different from what I am have seen before, but that really doesn't mean anything.
            I would like to hear what Tony has to say also.

              As mentioned the helmet is wrong, fake spike and inside plate, fake cockades and strap the liner looks like an aged up replacement and the visors are hand stitched in place, when the Germans did ersatz pieces they did not leave an obvious selection of brass and steel fittings and did not use repro pieces.
              I could not find space in my collection for this helmet, the tin one in the background is a nice looking thing on the other-hand.

                Thanks very much for your feedback about the helmet guy's.

                I've spoken to the gentleman I got it from who had offered a lifetime money back guarantee when I bought it. He is happy to refund the money as soon as I have sent it back to him.
                You can't say fairer than that. I think it was an honest mistake on his part.

                  Soldbuch, I understand what you mean but ersatz pieces can display brass and steel together IMO. The front visor trim & spine might be a replacement but the rear visor trim looks like leather to me which I have also seen before and more common on cloth covered pieces. This is a cloth covered leather helmet, so wouldn't hand stitching be acceptable? Just pointing out of few observations. You may be correct that is is not real but I am curious to hear Tony's opinion also. This may a have chance IMO. With all respect, Mike.

                    I think the jury is out on this one after all. I'm going to hold off sending it back until Tony does a final check. I'm new to this forum and I don't know who Tony is but all you guy seem to respect his opinion and that's good enough for me

                      Not trying to argue with anybody but I would bet the farm that the Germans NEVER hand stitched visors to the helmet body. Those boys had sewing machines for that.
                      If you can get your money back I would jump on it in a hurry.

                          Hello,
                          Sorry to say, but I have to agree with mr. Soldbuch here... Get your money back as fast as you can, it's a total ****...
                          They tried to copy a cork covered ersatz helmet here, but the fakers did it the wrong way on all mentioned points. Here are some pictures of 2 real ersatz spiked helmets... A lot of other variations are possible...
                          I hope this helps you a step forward in collecting Pickelhauben...

                          Adler 1

                          1) M14 Cork covered Sachsen (note special chinstrap and poor ersatz liner)






                          2) M15 Felt Prussia with grey painted steel fittings (also special cloth chinstrap, normally these are made of leather)

                              I looks like the jury is in on this one. I too thought maybe it stood a chance. Adler 1 has spoken.
                              My thoughts now are send it back. The seller seemed very reasonable on
                              his return policy.
