        I do have the mentioned book- German Flamethrower Pioneers of WWI, and have scrutinized all the details. This design did not look familiar.

          The one you have linked to is not really even close. I have seen three of these in person and they are very distinctive. One had to guess that sooner or later someone would try to fake one in hopes of cashing in on the dreams of every WWI German militaria collector.

                Just an added note. This past weekend a pair of these patches and a matching Erkennungsmarke (Garde Res. Pion. Rgt.), sold on a German dealer's website. The price for the three pieces was just over $1,500.00, a bargain, when you consider that one piece is known to have sold for 1,500.00 Euro!
