    U-Boot / Unterseeboots-Abteilung Matrose submarine cap!

I have a short question about a cap for Matrosen of the Unterseeboots-Abteilung (submarine)! Is it right, that those soldiers had a red (Karmesin) piping on the cap top (like Torpedoboot soldiers)?

      Sergeant 08,

Yes, that is correct, since April 1887.

Thank you for the information I purchased a Matrosen cap for a Imperial navy soldier of the Unterseeboots-Abteilung at the weekend. I will post photos after the arrival of the parcel.

I hate to tell it! The seller owened the complete uniform. The cap, jacket etc. from one person! He splitted the uniform in different auctions to get more money. I bought the cap, but I had no luck and another collector bought the jacket

If the buyer of the navy jacket read this thread: Please contact me, maybe there is chance to bring the cap and the jacket together again

Another question! What is the meaning of the gold and silver letters on the cap bands? Golden letters for the "real" sailors and silver for technical soldiers?

Generally speaking, I think you are correct, the Flottstamm-Divisionen wore gold lettering and the Werft-Divisionen wore silver lettering. The original distinction was land vs. see personnel. This included the flight personnel, who wore gold or silver letters depending on whether they were land or see based.

The cap looks excellent. The "II.T.3." marking is from the Torpedo-Division. Issue navy caps seem to be more difficult to find than the private purchase examples. I have two issue examples, one white, one blue. Still looking for a red (Karmesinrot) piped one.

I was searching for such a cap for a long time!

I have another blue one of the Werftdivison in my collection since some years. I think the II. Torpedo Division was located in Wilhelmshaven, too. A lot of navy units were in that town:

                          2. Marineinspektion,
                          2. Matrosendivision,
                          2. Werftdivision,
                          2. Matrosen-Artillerieabteilung,
                          Artillerie- und Minendepots,
                          Marine-Depoinspektion,
                          2. Torpedodivision,
                          2. Seebataillon,
                          3. Stamm- Seebataillon,
                          Kommandantur,
                          5. Bezirksküstenamt
