    Whats wrong with this liner?

Never mine the liner cord. I put that in to give the three pads some mutural support so they do not droop down. I stiched up the rear just to keep it in place and from moving. It's better then hot glue.

My question is the pads. They are original as is the liner but they almost look like M17 pads. But I saw nothing to suggest that it's been re worked. The Stiching looks un messed with.

Are they just lighter then normal pads, just fine or were M17 pads ever used to fill out the last of the M16 liner bands?

They are the light and thin leather sections that I have heard called both rabbit and sheep leather...I think that some were in fact rabbit although sheep may have also been used. I also mostly see these on 1917 metal bands.

I think that that answer to your question can only be determined by examining the stitching that attaches these to the leather band. If it is period I think that it will be obvious. If it is a period repair or re-work you should find some slightly off empty stitch holes from the first sections that were fitted.

I would think that it was entirely possible that this type of leather was used on some of the last fitted 1916 type liners. I would also suggest that some of these 1916 leather bands may have been used up after the 1917 type was introduced as that is just the nature of large scale wartime manufacturing.

Thanks, with this I believe the liner to be original and un messed with. Just never saw this rabbit leather on a leather liner band before but then I've not seen but a few dozen liners in person.

          W.,

I've never seen this combination before, but that doesn't mean it was never done... Hans?

I think most if not all of the possibilities have been covered to explain this odd and rare combination. I have seen white pads on a leather liner band once before. The pads here certainly look original as does the liner band.

The leather liner band is the two-ply version. I have wondered before whether this type was a later development to make up for shortages of the thicker quality leather normally used or if it was just a manufacturer's variant.

Wilhelm states that there are no signs of other pads having ever been on the band, and I would hazard a guess that this liner could easily be one of the final M16 models produced.

Wow what a score. Trust me the liner and pads are totally original and so is the stitching. I got this liner on ebay in a lot of 4 liners and I guess everyone forgot to bid cause I bid 200 because I have no money right now and forgot about it only to be shocked I won. I got three other liners one only the band but this liner alone was worth the money I paid.

Funny I've collected quite a collection of helmet spare parts mostly without trying much.

Edit, I only paid $132.00 for the 4 liners this one included.
