    Cavalry Unit Help

I do not know if this is right place, but thought maybe someone here would be more familiar with this subject than I am, since it relates to Imperial uniforms. I am trying to find out what unit my great great grandfather served in. I know he served as cavalry ca. 1881-1885 and was stationed in Hamburg, although he was from Hannover (the region, not the city) in a village west of Hamburg.

The problem is that some unknown distant relative has the photos of him in uniform and I only have a description of them from my grandfather, so not much to go by. He is wearing blue uniform, sash and Pickelhaube with parade plume in one photo and service uniform with Pickelhaube (and beer! ) in another. What type of cavalry units in Hamburg would fit such description during 1880s?

Also is there some German government agency that would have such old military records that I could contact about him?

    regards
    Klaus

    Hello
I think he was in Lüneburg (southeast of Hamburg 43 Km) where the
2th Hannoversche Dragoner Regiment Nr 16 have his garrison
You say he wear pickelhaube; yes the only one to wear pickelhaube in german cavalry are Dragoons (with haarbuch in parade)
I don't know other Hannoversche cavalry regiment in Hamburg or in his area
    Regards
