    Sappenpanzer Trench Armor

This set is being offered me for 1,000 U.S. Dollars. Looks like a modern repair to the
rigging so it can still be displayed properly. Missing pad is included.
Other then that anyone here know about this stuff? The shape of the main chest plate looks a little off from what I see in my reference book but it might be the photo or maybe there was some variation.

So any doubts about it's originality?

a lot of variations exist. This one looks good so far.
any markings somewhere in the back?

Just that number one you see. I don't have it in hand. It's on hold for me. I wish I could get a late war one with rifle support and hooks but I'd guess they are pretty hard to come by.

the number 1 is the size.
finding one with original paint, and with intact rigging is very hard, the rigging is very weak.
I would take this one for $1000 immediately, here in Europe they're going for much more, even with the broken belts.

the one with the hooks is a bit more difficult to find, especially with all the original paint on it.

I guess you had a lucky day, great helmet and great sappenpanzer in one time

Thanks, I don't get lucky very often. My collection is very modest mostly of mid to low end examples. I've only been doing this for 4 years. Before that I had helmets I piked up from gun shows that I really did not know much about. MY FIRST German helmet was a rust bucket I got when I was 11 but between then and 4 years ago I had no clue where to get some of this stuff and had little idea most of it could even be had.

Most of the good stuff is in collections and when it comes up for sale the guys who been doing this got all the connections and it gets snapped up. I also live in a small town and if I flew to the max or SOS or any of the shows I'd never afford the things I can buy.

Ivan, how many sizes did they have? And is size 1 the large or small assuming they only had small medium and large?

I think the only had two sizes, and "1" is the biggest.
I also have heard about three sizes, but i don't think they had.

Size large for a #1???? SCORE!!!

I just sent payment yesterday. Look forward to making a cross stand to display it on.

Been wanting one of these sets for a long time.

Maybe this Grabenpanzer is too big for me but I noticed not much dextarity is possible with the arms so picked up a Kar98 to shoulder it while wearing the armor and could not shoulder it. It's also painful to try.

How did anyone fight in these Panzer sets? From my experience wearing a German gas mask and hardly being able to see I can't imagine anyone wearing this armor and say a gas mask without becoming a dead man if the line they were in was being attacked.

I can see how it could work for a machine gunner or a feeder on his knees but not much else.
