It appears to be a pre WWI mdl/1895 Prussian Infantry picklehaub.
The spike has been taken off of it at some time and when replaced the inner black base plate was not put back in. The front rivit for the spike base is a replacement and not an original military one.
The chinstrap corcards have had the white stripes retouched.
The leather body seems all original in nice condition and the chinstrap also seems to be an original which is a plus.
All in all a good helmet that has been restored and /or worked on in recent history which has value but not quite as much as an untouched original.
                Just my opinion.

I agree with BryanD's opinion of this leather helmet. Are there extra holes behind the front plate? The front plate bothers me for some reason, but I'm not sure why.

                    thanks for the replies

no there are no extra holes behind the front plate.

i just noticed that the pictures are miss-leading in regards to the white on the cockades... it is not as bright as it may seem in the pictures

can anyone help make out the stamp on the rear visor?

i think that i can make out: _ _VILL?

if better pictures are needed just give me a shout.

                      thanks

There's an excellent article on depot marks at http://www.pickelhauben.net/articles/DepotMarks.htm but I don't see one that might end in VILL

Shouting. Could be an AK stamp. By the way, you will never see brush-strokes on the paint of an original Kokarde. That is a sure sign of touch-up. Touch-up on an original, is better than a fake though..
