My Felt EM Pickelhaube--Back to Life

Hello friends, I want to share with you the result of my birthday present this year. About 20 years ago, I found this old and salty felt EM pickelhaube in a local flea market. I bought it for a few bucks and it has been in my collection ever since, and ever since, I have wanted to replace the front plate that is missing from it. However, all the good ones that I see are about ten times as much as what I paid for the pickelhaube in the first place. Well, this year, my wife found a salty front plate that still had both attachment loops on the back and thought it would go well with my salty helmet, so she ordered it for me.

I think this front plate, which is missing one of the talons and thus came at a much reduced price, really matches well with the condition of the pickelhaube it will be matched with.

Thanks to a quick search of this forum, I was able to learn how these frontplates are attached--I had always wondered about that. So, without further delay, here is the restored piece. It doesn't hold a candle to some of them that you guys display here, but I have been wanting to restore this one for two decades now and I've done it at last.

            EKman,

Looks good. Now all you need is a salty chinstrap and a couple of worn cockades!

              Chip,

It's funny you should mention that. I've been trying to look at pics of other more complete examples and find out what else I would need to replace in order to complete this one. Would it be possible for someone to give me a list? I know I need a salty chinstrap as you say and it seems that there is some sort of brass band that runs round the edge of the felt. Where do the cockades come into play? Also, if anyone has any of these items that fit the general condition and wear that you see here, please let me know.

              Thanks,

              Chris

Not all had the brass trim to the peak - if there are no holes for the retaining studs etc then it did'nt have one fitted in the first place
